Information and Registration

 Skill Level: Beginner to Expert

An 8-hour (1-day), in-person beginner's course that introduces different types of pistols and teaches safe firearms handling.


The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Instructor-Led Only program, serves as a foundational program for beginners and frequently satisfies the live fire training prerequisites for a concealed carry weapon (CCW) permit in various states. This immersive environment not only builds fundamental marksman skills but also instills the vital defensive mindset and safety habits necessary for responsible, everyday handgun ownership.

What You Will Learn

You will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for pistol fundamentals, as well as how to utilize different shooting positions for effective marksmanship.


In the classroom, you will learn the mechanical differences between semi-automatics and revolvers, how to select and inspect ammunition, and how to safely clean a pistol. On the firing range, through this tailored instruction, you will build precise shooting fundamentals—including sight alignment, grip, and trigger control—culminating in a live fire qualification where you will put your new marksman skills into practice.

Preparation and Knowledge

 Course Prerequisites

  • Be no less than 21 years of age at the time of registration.
  • Possess a physical valid Government or Legal Resident photo ID card.
  • Ability to read, speak and comprehend the English Language.
  • Ability to check your email inbox and phone text message regularly.
  • Ability to arrive early and check-in on time.
  • Ability to conduct firearm safe handling demonstrations.

    • Actual valid ID Card (no photos)
  2. For Learning
    • Pen, Pencil and Notebook with Paper
  3. For Qualification
    • 1 Pistol (Actions: Revolver, Semi-Automatic or Single)
    • 200 Rounds of Target Ammunition
    • 2-6 Magazines, Moonclips or Speedloaders (if applicable)
  4. For Safety
    • Ear Protection
    • Eye Protection
    • Gun Case or Range Bag
    • Brimmed Hat
    • Close-toed Shoes
    • Long Pants
    • Thick Belt
  5. For Sustenance
    • Lunch or Snacks

* Students are required to bring their own registered handgun and ammunition. Loaner handguns available for range qualification only.

Finishing the Course

 Congratulations!

Upon successful completion of this course (90%+ passing score on the written exam and passing the live fire shooting qualification), an NRA-Certified Pistol Instructor will send you digital Certificates of Completion from Sure Grip Arms and the National Rifle Association (NRA) by email.


Most importantly, you will leave with the confidence, guidance, and proficiency to safely own and handle a pistol!
